One Day in the Northern City: International Photo Project

The project “One Day in the Northern City” is addressed to photographers living in the cities of the North of Europe, Asia and America. On November the 26th , 2010 – in the World Information Day, they are invited to make shots which can tell us about this day in the cities where they live. This kind of action of photographers from different countries will create an illusion of our simultaneous presence in different points of the planet and miraculous feeling of parallel living of one common day in the cities of Sweden, Finland, Russia, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Canada and other countries. It will also give a unique opportunity to look at these towns and cities with the eyes of artists. The best photo works, selected by the jury, will be presented at the exhibition, which will let Petrozavodsk public know more about people, nature and architecture, holidays and problems, happy and sad moments in the life of Northern cities with all their typicality and originality. View the event information document for additional details, conditions of entry and more!

2010 Young Artists Competition — Your World… What Makes You, You?

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Duluth’s partnership with sister city Ohara-Isumi City in Japan. This union began when a bell from a Buddhist temple was found in Duluth in 1954 and later returned to Ohara. Since then, each city has done their part to strengthen this unique friendship; consisting of numerous student exchanges and delegation visits. This art exhibit is just another piece of the mission that Duluth Sister Cities embodies in “building bridges to global understanding.”

In celebration of Duluth and Ohara-Isumi City’s 20th year of Sister City commitment, young artists from both cities are taking part in a watercolor painting exchange. Eight of Duluth’s elementary schools contributed a combined 88 paintings into the exchange and there an additional 55 paintings from Japan. All of the artists are fourth and fifth graders and were asked to interpret the theme: Your World…What Makes You, You?

This international theme opens the door for each artist to personally reflect on and interpret not only who they are as individuals, but also the way they fit into the world around them. Paintings from Duluth’s students will be on display at the Great Lakes Aquarium until July and will then be sent to Ohara-Isumi City to be displayed there. Japan’s paintings will be displayed here beginning in July until the end of August.
